Blue Watch are preparing for the arrival of their replacement Firefighter.
Station Officer Tate & Sub Officer Hallam are the only ones who know the identity of the new firefighter.With the exception of Bayleaf,the members of Blue Watch react with uniform hostility to the arrival of Firewoman Ingham. but she earns their respect during an emergency call to a block of flats by refusing to be flustered at the sight of a man curtain ring wedged on an embarrassing part of his body. More serious problems follow, first when a child is killed in a house fire and then when a young black firefighter Ethnic, on the eve of his promotionto Leading Fireman in an another division, becomes embroiled in a ghetto riot on his estate between black residents and the police. As Blue Watch fight raging fires,Ethnic rescues Charisma from being rescued by a gang who have surrounded him in an alley which ends up costing Ethnic his life, as another gang in a block of flats have witnessed Ethnics actions and launch a paving stone down on him,in which he dies instantly,back at the station Blue Watch eat in silence the feast they had prepared to celebrate Ethnics promotion, Charisma whois devastated at Ethnics death pushes his plate away unable to eat the meal but Vasaline pushes the plate back.During the next Roll call Blue Watch are joined by Ethnics mate who has joined the brigade . After rescuing a boy's pet cat from the roof, Blue Watch accidently run over the animal in theirappliance,killing it.They then attend a warehouse fire where vaseline is seriously hurt when his boots catch fire. An old tramp who has been dossing in the basement burns to death but his cat survives. The watch take the animal to the boy to replace the one they had crushed earlier. Meanwhile they raise £1,200 for charity by pushing an antique fire engine through the streets...but then Tate discovers the money has gone missing and the police are called in. The watch are summoned to an incident in which raiders have cemented a wealthy young city trader into the bowl of his lavatory. Unable to release him, the firemen can hardly contain themselves as he is carried, still cemented to the lavatory bowl, to a waiting ambulance. The next shout is to a major road crash caused by a lonely, depressed old lady deliberately walking out into the busy main road in front of a lorry. New recruit Kevin panics when he finds a child trapped in the back of one of the crushed cars and Sicknote really is sick on discovering, amidst all the carnage and confusion, the old lady's severed head. On the domestic front, tongues are wagging over Bayleafs relationship with Josie and hard-up Tony confesses to wife Dorothy that he took the £1,200 but found himself unable to steal it and hid it in the store room. Dorothy confides in Josie who helps Tony to secretly return the cash to Tates office. The matter is closed.

Charisma is flattered when an attractive young woman named Donna chats him up in a pub. He learns that she used to be the common-law wife of a former fireman nicknamed Liver Salts. But no sooner has she moved herself in with Charisma than he discovers from the rest of the watch that she took Liver Salts for a ride financially. Tate is behaving irrationally and humiliates Hallam over an incident involving some missing tramps believed trapped inside a demolished warehouse. Hallam had called out appliances from all over London but the tramps were reallt at a nearby off-licence. Blue Watch are called to a fire at a business premises next to a lockup where deadly chemicals are stored. Tate warns that they must find out more about the chemicals before tackling the blaze but Charisma, would up over a row with Donna, ignores the orders and rushes into the fire. A car petrol tank inside explodes and the fire roars out, engulfing Charisma. Badly burned, he is taken to hospital where he is visited by Donna.Althought barely able to speak as a result of his injuries, he tells Donna that he knoes all about her. Donna is livid that the Watch have turne Charisma againest her.
